Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez has announced plans to nationalize his country’s cement industry, revealing plans to purchase shares of Holcim and Lafarge subsidiaries currently operating in the South American country.
The move is further evidence that Chavez is continuing to push his country in the direction of what he has called “21st-Century Socialism.”
Chavez has long accused cement firms of exploiting citizens of Venezuela and he has said the nationalizing of the industry would push the country closer to meeting the demands for housing.
According to reports Chavez wants to secure at least 60% ownership of cement companies.

Russia Withdrawal from Georgia Appears Stalled as Troops Remain in Place

Russia has said they have begun pulling troops out of the conflict zone inside Georgia yet evidence of that has been hard to uncover as forces remain inside the city of Gori and short-range missiles have reportedly been installed in South Ossetia.
According to Moscow, forces would fall back from Georgia territory yet they have not recognized South Ossetia as being part of that territory.
While troops remain in South Ossetia the more troubling aspect of the Russian presence is just outside the Georgia capital of Tbilisi where forces appear to be set in. Russia has said they would keep forces in place as peacekeepers yet according to the ceasefire agreement signed on Saturday Russia’s President Dmitry Medvedev had agreed to the return of troops to pre-conflict areas.
Many of those troops remain in Gori where Russia has complete control. Moscow has maintained that Russia would use Gori as a buffer between Tbilisi and South Ossetia.

Chinese officials confiscated more than 300 Bibles from an American Christian group attempting to carry the books into the country through their checked luggage.
Members of the group Vision Beyond Borders have said they would not leave the airport until the Bibles, written in Chinese, were returned.
China assured visitors prior to hosting the 2008 Beijing Olympics that Bibles were admissible when brought into the country yet Sunday’s action appears to contradict that statement. Bibles are not illegal in China yet the act of trying to convert people to a particular religion is not allowed.
The four members of Vision Beyond Borders remained in the airport Sunday night and have refused to leave.

Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf Announces Resignation

Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf has announced he will resign as his country’s leader rather than face the impeachment charges that have been leveled against him by the coalition government.
Earlier this month the coalition government formalized a deal that would level impeachment charges against Musharraf and those charges had been finalized just hours before the president announced on national television that he would resign.
Musharraf rose to power after a bloodless military coup in 1999 in which Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was deposed. As president, Musharraf quickly became an ally of the United States and was seen as a major partner in the war on terrorism but within his own country he was quickly cast as the source of growing violence.
One month after winning re-election in October 2007 Musharraf set his own downfall in motion when he declared a state of emergency while dismissing and jailing several judges and lawyers. He also suspended the chief justice prior to the judiciary’s ruling on

Heavy rains are being blamed for the Redlands Dam break in Arizona that forced hundreds of people to be evacuated from the Grand Canyon on Sunday.
Members of the Havasupai tribe who live in the town of Supai at the bottom of the Grand Canyon were forced to evacuate when waters began rushing through their homes.
Several campers and rafters were also forced to evacuate, many being transported by helicopter to a nearby Peach Springs where the Red Cross had set up a shelter.

In a move described as a goodwill gesture to Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas, the Israeli cabinet has voted to free about 200 Palestinian prisoners before the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
Israel is said to have up to 11,000 Palestinian prisoners and the list of 200 to be freed is yet to be finalized. An aide to Abbas has said the Israeli move to free the prisoners was “step in the right direction” but more should gain their freedom.
While Ramadan is scheduled to start September 1 and stretch through the end of the month the actual release will likely take place around August 25.

While the talks at the Southern African Development Community summit the past two days were dominated by the subject of Zimbabwe the end result has done little to improve the current situation in the troubled country.
The leaders of the 14-member SADC met in Johannesburg for talks on Saturday and Sunday with the main issue being a power-sharing deal in Zimbabwe. That issue continues to stall as Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe and opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai have failed to reach a compromise.
Despite the stalled talks South African President Thabo Mbeki has said progress has been made and they would push forward until a solution was reached.
According to some reports Tsvangirai, leader of the Movement for Democratic Change party, has agreed to assume the role of prime minister while allowing Mugabe to keep his presidency but the exact nature of the balance of power remains a sticking point.
Tsvangirai won Zimbabwe’s first round of presidential elections in March yet officials declared he

The first day of talks at the Southern African Development Community summit in Johannesburg was dominated by the question regarding Zimbabwe and continued hope for a power-sharing deal within the troubled country.
South African President Thabo Mbeki has been trying to broker an agreement between Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe and opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai for more than a month yet both sides have failed to come to a compromise.
Despite the impasse Mbeki opened the SADC with hope stating, “This summit affords us the possibility to assist the Zimbabwean parties to finalize their negotiations so that together they can engage the work to achieve national healing and reconciliation.”
Both Mugabe and Tsvangirai are in attendance at the summit. The SADC summit is scheduled for two days.

Russia has signed a peace deal to end the conflict in Georgia but has said they would not remove all their forces until security measures were put in place.
According to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov there would be no timetable on troop departure from Georgia yet his country remains pressed by the international community to withdraw.
Russia has been cautious regarding that withdrawal due to the ongoing conflict regarding residents of the breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Russia has stated that residents in those regions did not want to be part of Georgia yet Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili has said they would not accept the loss of any territory.
While both sides refuse to concede regarding the future of the breakaway regions Russian President Dmitry Medvedev inked his name to a truce on Saturday that outlined six major points. Saakashvili had already signed the French-brokered deal.
As outlined in the peace deal there would be no more use of force; all military

The United States has demanded that Russia immediately remove its troops from Georgian territory following a ceasefire deal signed by Georgia President Mikhail Saakashvili.
Saakashvili had signed a EU-brokered deal that stipulated an end to the use of force; the end of military actions; access to humanitarian aid; the return of Georgian troops to permanent deployment places; the return of Russian troops to pre-conflict positions; and an agreement to international talks concerning the breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
Speaking at a news conference in Tbilisi Saakashvili used strong language to warn his Georgian citizens of the danger posed by Russia, saying the country was now “looking evil directly in the eye.” Saakashvili also pledged to “never ever surrender” territory to its northern neighbor.
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was standing alongside Saakashvili in Tbilisi and addressed the ceasefire deal signed by Georgia and removal of Russian troops noting, “With this

Botswana will boycott the upcoming Southern African Development Community summit set to take place in South Africa because Zimbabwe’s controversial President Robert Mugabe will be in attendance.
Seretse Khama Ian Khama, President of Botswana, has said Mugabe should be left out of the summit until a power-sharing deal is reached in Zimbabwe. He also urged other members of the 14-nation SADC to voice their outrage concerning the condition of Zimbabwe.
Mugabe maintained control of Zimbabwe following June’s controversial presidential election in which he ran unopposed following opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai’s decision to drop out of the race less than a week before the vote.
Tsvangirai had accused Mugabe of using violence to intimidate his Movement for Democratic Change supporters and said the election was not free and fair as had been promised.
South African President Thabo Mbeki has moderated power-sharing talks between the MDC and Mugabe’s ZANU-PF party yet an agreement has not been reached.

Hissen Habre, former President of Chad, has been sentenced to death for his role in an attempted coup earlier this year.
Habre had served eight years as president but was deposed in 1990 following an uprising sparked by current President Idriss Deby. Following the uprising Habre fled to Senegal where he currently lives in exile.
It is unlikely Habre, who has been accused of more than 40,000 politically motivated murders, will return to Chad. His death sentence was based on his actions earlier this year in which he led rebels in an attempt to overthrow the government in the capital city of N’Djamena.

The United States and Poland have signed a preliminary deal designed to bolster the U.S.’s defense presence in Europe.
As part of the deal Poland would host 10 U.S. missile interceptors in exchange for assistance in bolstering the Polish air defense.
While the U.S. has billed the missile interceptors as strengthening their defenses against long-range missile strikes the deal has been harshly criticized by Russia who claims the move will upset the balance of power in Europe.
Russia has already said they would point their missiles at any installation that houses the U.S. interceptors. Those installations would be up and running by 2012 according to the deal.

Nigeria Hands Over Bakassi Peninsula to Cameroon

After agreeing to hand over the disputed territory of the Bakassi Peninsula to Cameroon two years ago Nigeria completed the handover on Thursday during a ceremony in Calabar.
While the majority of the Bakassi Peninsula considers itself Nigerian the International Court of Justice ruled the territory belonged to Cameroon in a 2002 decision. Nigeria had appealed that decision but in 2006 opted to relinquish the territory.
An estimated 90 percent of the Bakassi population, about 300,000 people, is Nigerian, many of whom are fishermen who rely upon the Gulf of Guinea for their livelihood. When Nigeria announced plans to turn Bakassi over to Cameroon a large number of that population flooded into Nigeria.
Cameroonians have celebrated the handover with a mass move into the territory while many Nigerians remain bitter over their government’s decision to abandon Bakassi.
