The United States and China lead the medal count thus far in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, according to reports on Monday. The U.S. is second to China with26 gold medals. The U.S.has also earned26 silver medals and27 bronze medalsto bring their medal count to79 overall, the highest of all nations. Michael Phelps set the all-time Olympic record for eight gold medals in a single Olympics, breaking Mark Spitz's record from the 1972 Olympics. Phelps extendedhis all-time recordfor most Olympic gold medals to 14. PhelpssetOlympic records in each event, but set seven, not eight,world records. Phelps missed the world record in the 100-meter freestyle (50.58), but set an Olympic record in the event. LaShawn Merritt and Jeremy Wariner advance to the finals of the 400-meters track event at the 2008Summer Olympics in Beijing. Merritt and Wariner,the U.S. teammates,came in first and second of all qualifying times in the semifinals with times of 44.12 and 44.15, respectively. Christopher Brown of the Bahamas came in third with 44.59. Wariner and Merritt both set their personal bests in the 2007 World Championships in Osaka, Japan. Wariner won the gold with 43.45, the third fastest-time in history. Merritt won the silver with 43.96, the eighth fastest-time in history. The world record for the 400 meters was set by Wariner's mentor, Michael Johnson, in 1999 with 43.18. The Olympic record was set by Quincy Watts at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics with 43.50. Usain Bolt, the world's fastest man, qualified for the 200-meter finals on Tuesday in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. Bolt, who set the world and Olympic record in the 100-meters on Saturday, could become the first track and field runner to win the 100-meters and 200-meters in the same Olympic Games since Carl Lewis in 1984. Bolt, the Jamaica native,won the gold medal for the 100m in historic fashion, running a time of 9.69seconds while pounding his chest with 15-20 meters left in the race. Bolt had the fastest qualifying time of all of the 200-meter heats, running in 20.09 seconds. USA's Shawn Crawford (20.12), Wallace Spearmon (20.14) and 100-meter bronze medalist Walter Dix (20.19) also qualified. Crawford won the gold medal in the 2004 Athens Olympics for the 200m. Bolt's personal best is 19.67, the fifth-fastest time in history, justbehind Spearmon's time of 19.65. The U.S. baseball team advanced to the semifinals Tuesdayin the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. After defeating Taiwan (Chinese Taipei), 4-2, the U.S. team earned a berth into the medal round. Dexter Fowlerwent 3-for-3 with a triple and an RBI double, and John Gall added a solo home run to help Team USA earn the win. Brandon Knightpitched 6 1/3 innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits to pick up the win. Team USA concludes round-robin action on Wednesdayversus Japan at 7 a.m. EST. Cuba will play China on Tuesday at 10:30 p.m. in a game that will determine the No. 1 seed in the semifinals. The semifinals begin on Thursday at 10:30 p.m. EST and will continue on Friday at 6 a.m. EST. Gerd Kanter of Estonia won the gold medal in the men's discus throw on Tuesday in 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. Kanter, the reigning world champion,threw the discus 68.82 meters (225 feet, 9 inches) in his fourth attempt in the track and field event. Poland's Piotr Malachowski won the silver medal at 67.82 meters (222-6) and Virgilijus Alekna of Lithuania, the two-time world and Olympic champion, won the bronze at 67.79 (222-5). Hungary's Robert Fazekas, who was stripped of the gold medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics for a doping violation after throwing 70.93 (232-8), placed eighth. He returned to the track and field competition in 2006 after serving a two-year ban. Dawn Harper of the U.S. won the gold medal in the 100-meter hurdles on Tuesday in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. Harper won the 100m hurdles in a personal best 12.54 seconds Tuesday after U.S. teammate Lolo Jones, who had a clear lead, was knocked off balance when she hit the next-to-last hurdle. Australia's Sally Mcclellan won the silver medalin a photo finish over Canada's Priscilla Lopes-Schliep, who won the bronze. Both ran a 12.64, but when the time was extended to thousandths of a second, it was shown that Mcclellan had a faster time. Jones, the world indoor champion who had the season-leading time going into the final, finished seventh in 12.72. Fellow teammate Damu Jones was fourth with 12.65. Christine Ohuruogu takes home a gold medalfor Great Britain after winning the women's 400-meters track event Tuesdayin the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. Ohurogu, the reigning world champion,ranthe 400-meters in49.62 seconds, followed by Jamaica's Shericka Williams (49.69) and USA's Sanya Richards (49.93). 2008 Beijing Olympics Results: U.S. Women's Basketball Routs S. Korea, Advances to Semifinals

Sylvia Fowles helped to lead the U.S. women's basketball team to a quarterfinal win on Tuesday against South Korea in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. Fowles scored 26 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in the 104-60 win against South Korea as the U.S. team advances to the semifinals. It is the sixth straight Olympics that the Americans have advanced to the medal round. The USA team will face either Russia or Spain in the semifinals Thursday night. China plays Australia in the other semifinal. The U.S. has now won 31 straight games since losing to the Unified team in the semifinals of the 1992 Olympics. The Americans were 5-0 in their pool, winning by an average of 43 points. South Korea started the game on a hot streak, shooting 9-of-16 (59%) in the first quarter. The United States women’s basketball team advanced to the semifinals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics on Tuesday after dismantling the South Korean women’s team 104-60. Sylvia Fowles led the charge with 26 points and 14 rebounds as the Americans coasted after a tougher than expected first quarter. The U.S. led 25-21 at the end of the first but then used a 26-9 second quarter to pad their lead and after halftime the South Koreans were buried. The U.S. will now face the winner of the Spain v. Russia game in the semis. China also advanced on Tuesday after beating Belarus 77-62 and they will face Australia who blasted the Czech Republic 79-46 to remain undefeated. Leszek Blanik claimed the gold medal in men’s vault in gymnastics at the 2008 Beijing Olympics on Monday after the sport’s tie-breaker system favored the Pole. The U.S. men's basketball team advanced toWednesday's quarterfinals after defeating Germany, 106-57, in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. With the win, Team USA won all of their Group B pool games by 32.2 points and averaged 103 points per game. The U.S. women's basketball team continue their mission to win their fourth consecutive gold medal in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. Team USA (5-0) will take on South Korea in the Olympic basketball quarterfinals on Tuesday at 8 a.m. EST. The U.S. team finished as the top seed in Group B as they sailed through the preliminary round undefeated. Australia topped Group A after going undefeated as well in the preliminaries. China's He Kexin won the gold medal in the uneven bars in women's gymnastics on Monday in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. Hewon the tiebreaker from Nastia Luikin (U.S.), who won the individual all-around final gold medal last week. Both He and Luikin scored a 16.725, but He received the gold because her executionscores were closer to a perfect 10 than Liukin's. Luikin has now won four overal medals, two of which are silver.
