The Detroit Pistons began free agency with a vengeance, signing Chicago Bulls guard Ben Gordon and Milwaukee Bucks forward Charlie Villanueva on Thursday.
The Pistons signed Gordon to a contract worth $58 million over five years and Villanueva a five-year, $40 million deal. Pistons GM Joe Dumars spent all $19 million that Detroit had left under its salary cap.
The acquisitions of Gordon and Villanueva are important as the Pistons will more than likely lose Rasheed Wallace and Antonio McDyess to free agency.
Despite playing for separate Central Division teams, Gordon and Villanueva were college teammates at Connecticut, where they teamed up to win the 2004 NCAA Championship.
Last season, Villanueva had career highs in points (16.2) and rebounds (6.7) for Milwaukee last season.
Gordon, one of the NBA's best sixth men, averaged 20.7 points and 3.4 assists for the Bulls last season, including 24.3 points during their epic first-round series against the Boston Celtics.

Bryant chose not to terminate the final two years of his contract. He had until Tuesday to become an unrestricted free agent.
Now the Lakers and Bryant's agent will negotiate a contract extension. He has spent his entire 13-year career with the team, winning four NBA championships. He was named Finals MVP as he led the Lakers to their 15th championship last month.
On June 19, Bryant said, "I'm not going anywhere. I know I ain't going nowhere, so it's just a waste of our breaths just talking about it."
Bryant is scheduled to make a salary of $23 million next season.
The Los Angeles Times reported late Tuesday that Bryant will sign a three-year extension with the Lakers sometime this month. Bryant could make $47.8 million over the next two years and another $86 million to $91 million with the extension, with the difference depending on the future salary cap, the newspaper reported.

Orlando Magic forward Hedo Turkoglu declined a four-year contract extension worth $35 million after opting out of his contract.
Turkoglu will now enter free agency on July 1 as an unrestricted free agent.
Turkoglu was due $7.3 million next season in the final year of his $36 million, six-year deal with the Magic. Turkoglu averaged 16.8 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.9 assists last season for the Eastern Conference champions.
During the Finals, Turkoglu led the team in scoring with 18 points per game. The Magic lost to the LA Lakers in five games.
According to reports, Turkoglu declined the contract extension last week prior to the NBA Draft. Orlando then made a blockbuster trade to send Rafer Alston, Tony Battie and rookie Courtney Lee to New Jersey for Vince Carter and Ryan Anderson.
With Carter’s contract ($16.3 million in 2009-10), it will be difficult for Orlando to re-sign Turkoglu, who is expecting a $10 million per year deal.
The Magic had said they wanted Turkoglu to return. They may

Dinara Safina has made a habit of putting herself in tough situations at Wimbledon and Tuesday was no different as the world’s number one needed three sets to get past Sabine Lisicki 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-1 to reach the semifinals at the All England Club.
Safina overcame an astounding 15 double faults and 38 unforced errors to get past Lisicki, much of that had to do with her capitalizing on opportunities as she broke the German’s serve on 6 of 11 chances. Lisicki had 12 aces in the match but her 42 unforced errors were enough to do her in.
Safina has reached the finals of the French Open the last two years but fell to Ana Ivanovic in 2008 and then Svetlana Kuznetsova earlier this year. In 2009 she reached the finals at the Australian Open but again fell, this time to Serena Williams. Despite never winning a Grand Slam singles title Safina reached the number one in the rankings on April 27, 2009.

The Milwaukee Bucks have had a busy week as they have allowed Charlie Villanueva to enter free agency and are dealing with rookie Brandon Jennings’ recent statements.
The Bucks made qualifying offers to restricted free agent guard Ramon Sessions and forward Ersan Ilyasova, but will not make an offer to forward Charlie Villanueva, which will allow Villanueva to become an unrestricted free agent.
The deadline for teams to make offers to their restricted free agents is Tuesday.
Villanueva has reportedly received interest from the Cleveland Cavaliers, who are looking for a versatile forward to go along with LeBron James. The Cavs just traded for Shaquille O’Neal and lost Anderson Varejao to free agency. They are also interested in Rasheed Wallace and Antonio McDyess, according to reports.
Villanueva has a very good relationship with current Cavs guard Mo Williams from when they both played for Milwaukee. Villanueva also has a good relationship with James after the two played together in the

Jason Kidd will host a meeting with the New York Knicks on Wednesday morning, according to the New York Daily News.
Kidd, 36, could sign with the Knicks for the mid-level exception, which is expected to be between $5 million and $6 million, or the team could negotiate a sign-and-trade with the Dallas Mavericks.
The Knicks have been actively seeking a point guard. They are still interested in Ricky Rubio, the No. 5 pick of the 2009 NBA Draft, and have expressed strong interest in a deal to get him from the Minnesota Timberwolves. They also were looking at Milwaukee Bucks guard Ramon Sessions, but he has agreed to a deal to remain with the Bucks.
The Knicks are trying to gather some attractive players to entice Cleveland Cavaliers star LeBron James, who becomes a free agent next summer. Having Kidd on the team could be a great attraction for James.
Last season, Kidd earned $21.37 million in salary while playing for the Mavs. He averaged a career-low 9.0 points per game, to go along with 8.7 assists

Houston Rockets center Yao Ming may miss the entire season due to a foot injury, according to reports on Tuesday.
The injury could reportedly force Yao to miss more than a season or even end his career.
The team initially said Yao would miss eight to 12 weeks, but a bone scan last week revealed that the fracture is not healing properly. Yao suffered a hairline fracture of the tarsal navicular bone of his left foot in the Rockets' second-round playoff loss to the Lakers on May 8.
Although Yao could face surgery to insert a pin in the foot, a bone graft or even realignment of the foot, the team is trying immobilization for right now.
"He has no tenderness, no swelling, no redness," team physician Tom Clanton said, according to the Houston Chronicle. "When he came back in, he was feeling like everything was perfect, and he would start rehabilitation and get ready to play. The findings on the CT were shocking for him and for us."
Yao played in 77 regular-season games in 2008-09, his most
