Ceramic capacitors have a solid body made of high-temperature, ceramic resistive material with bonded metal contacts. AVX’s TAW series of fused tantalum capacitor protect against damaging high DC leakage currents at high currents. Short circuit failure mode protection is accomplished using an internal fuse connected in series with the capacitor. When the fuse exceeds its current limit, the fused capacitor will fail safe by effectively removing itself from the circuit by creating a high resistance path of above 10MΩ. Tantalum capacitor are a form of electrolytic capacitor. However, some forms of them are non-polar, containing two capacitors connected in series (negative to negative). In comparison with aluminium electrolytic capacitors, they are for similar capacitance and volume ratings generally more expensive, with lower effective series resistance. Component makers are cautiously optimistic that unit demand for Tantalum Capacitor will remain strong this year, which could result in a tight supply of these devices in the second half of 2001. Contributing to the problem is a shortage of raw materials that became apparent at the end of 2000. Although supply for Tantalum Capacitor in smaller package sizes such as A and B is more in line with demand, larger C, D and E(X) sizes are still in short supply, say passive-component suppliers. “Supply for A, B and P case sizes has loosened up dramatically due to lower demand from cell-phone manufacturers,” said Rich Schuster, the president of NIC Components Corp. Ceramic Chip Capacitors Purpose:This experiment documents and monitors tin whisker growth on one lot of pure tin-plated multilayer ceramic capacitor (MLCCs) mounted inside a hybrid using conductive (silver) epoxy and then subjected to extensive thermal cycling followed by long term ambient storage. The experiment was initiated in 2001 by a non-NASA entity who then donated one of their test samples to NASA Goddard tin whisker researchers for continued monitoring.
